Self-taught in his later years and shaped by many real-life teachers, chance meetings, and guiding encounters, diamond in the rough singer-songwriter Jean-Matthieu Ferland, known as “J-M,” follows a creative path much like the wind itself –unpredictable, serendipitous – carried left and right, backwards, and forward through his collaboration with Land of Lions.
Originally from Montréal, J-M grew up traveling back and forth the stretch of Highway 10 between Granby and the Champlain Bridge.
At just 17 years old, he enlisted in the military, trading a date and his high school prom night for his first day of recruit training. The nomadic rhythm of a soldier’s life carried him across Canada and beyond its borders.
Now a veteran living in Oromocto, New-Brunswick, J-M chose to reinvent himself, discovering a renewed sense of purpose in the quiet power of writing and performing songs and stories.
Along his path of musical self-discovery, J-M encountered kindred spirits and collaborators, struggles and heartaches, but whose presence helped shape the evolving sound and soul of Land of Lions.
From busking on street corners to performing in meaningful spaces and venues, the sails are raised and the compass set to trust. The wind will decide the rest. The journey continues.
